Driving tips for au pair.

Knowing traffic rules, cultural habits, and local customs is essential for a smooth and enjoyable experience. In this article, I am bringing you some important tips to help you drive confidently and responsibly during your time in the U.S. In some American states, au pair candidates may need to obtain a local driver's license, because the International Driving Permit (IDP)  (in Portuguese known as PID) may not be accepted in these states. Some places where IDP is not accepted may include California, New York, and Massachusetts.

In the U.S., pedestrians have the right to cross at designated crosswalks. Drivers always stop for pedestrians waiting to cross. Also, remember, when you are a pedestrian use the crosswalks whenever you need to cross as well. Don't ignore a pedestrian's right, if you want to avoid a fine or avoid an unfortunate accident.

The seatbelt is crucial to keep you and all passengers, especially your host kids, with you in the car safe. Before you start any trip, make sure all of you are security buckled up. Young kids need the right seat according to their age and size.

In many places in the U.S., you can turn right at the traffic red light after ensuring the way is clear and safe. This is part of traffic rules, and also contributes to smoother traffic flow. Being mindful and executing right turns on the red appropriately can help improve the overall efficiency. 

It's important to know parking rules. It's crucial to avoid fines and towing. You need to pay attention to the street signs, parking meters, and designated parking areas. Knowing local parking customs ensures a smooth experience.

Every kind of traffic information contributes to keeping your trip safe and avoiding fines or towing. During the trip, it is common for passengers to enjoy snacks. Please remind them not to throw the trash on the roads; instead, use designated bins for disposal.  Not only does this help to keep the environment clean it also prevents potential traffic violations.
