Modal verbs are small words like can, could, may, might, must, should, will, and would. Even though they are short, they are very important in English because they change the meaning, tone, and feeling of a sentence.

Modals help speakers express ideas such as ability, permission, advice, possibility, and obligation.

For example:

I can speak English. (ability)

You should practice every day. (advice)

You must finish the work today. (strong obligation)

It might rain tomorrow. (possibility)

Modals are also important because they can change how the listener feels about the message.

For example:

Open the window. (sounds like a command)

Could you please open the window? (sounds polite)

The meaning is similar, but the listener’s point of view changes. The second sentence sounds more respectful  polite and friendly.

In daily communication, especially in business and professional situations, modals help us sound polite, clear, and professional.

In short, modal verbs are important because they help us express our ideas clearly and influence how our message is understood by the listener.
