In this pop-up class, you will learn how to accurately use phrasal verbs.
Phrasal verbs are combinations of a verb and one or two particles, which can be separable or inseparable. The meaning of a phrasal verb is often idiomatic and unrelated to the meanings of the individual words, so it's important to understand how to use them properly.
In terms of word order, most of the time, the words in a phrasal verb stay together. For intransitive and inseparable transitive phrasal verbs, the verb, and the particle must go next to each other and should never be split up. Separable phrasal verbs, on the other hand, allow the direct object to be placed in the middle of the verb and the particle.
In separable phrasal verbs, the verb and particle can be apart or together. For example, “They've called off the meeting” and “They've called the meeting off” are both correct, but when using a personal pronoun, the phrasal verb must be separated, as in “The meeting? They've called it off”.
You will have learned how to differentiate and use different kinds of phrasal verbs by the end of this pop up class.
